display_description
Raleigh City Cemeteries Preservation (RCCP) is a non profit organization established in 2006 to promote and provide preservation and restoration of Raleigh's three city owned historic public cemeteries; City Cemetery, Mt. Hope Cemetery, and O'Rorke Cemetery. Their mission is to help the City of Raleigh promote and provide preservation and restoration of city-owned cemeteries and assist with programs to enhance education and heritage tourism. The collection contains various materials relating to cemeteries in and around Raleigh, NC. Noteable is a printed City Cemetery Database, created by RCCP, which contains the names of all interred at City Cemetery, an inventory of significant burial plots and monuments in Mount Hope Cemetery, a 2010 cemetery census of O'Rorke Cemetery, and Oberlin Road Cemetery registers of those interred from 1908-2000 and 1888-1924. This collection contains organizational records. The Raleigh City Cemeteries Preservation Inc. records range in date from 1966-2023, with the bulk of the records dating from 2006-2023. The collection is arranged into Organizational Records which consists of clippings, photographs, printed materials, projects, reports, and research. The collection is particularly strong in cemetery research. Of the three city cemeteries most prominent in the collection, Mount Hope and City Cemetery contain indices of Black and enslaved individuals who are interred on the properties. ORorke Cemetery was originally a Catholic cemetery. The collection contains indices of Catholics buried there from 1858-1938 after which time it was a potters field where the poor and less fortunate were interred from 1941-1986, when it became full.
