"Overconfidence, communication breakdowns, misjudgement of the opponent, poor planning, misinformation, stubborness, misuse of technology, arrogance, incompetence, failure to adjust to change, and just plain bad luck - all too often, such factors have played a central role in determining the outcome of military conflicts. Although it might seem odd to focus a course on the theme of failure, it is only by understanding why plans or strategies have gone wrong in the past that we can gain knowledge of how to potentially avoid such mistakes today. This investigation becomes especially urgent in the arena of warfare. There is no field of human endeavor in which the stakes are higher or the long-term consequences greater than war. Errors committed on the battlefield are paid in the most precious commodity of all: human lives. The premise of this course is to examine some of the most notable military blunders in history to ascertain what we can learn from these instances of spectacular failure"--From course scope.
