General Note
Mr. Hill, also known as "Old Secretary Hill", served in the original State House and in its successor. He assumed the post of N.C. Secretary of State in 1811 until his death in 1857, about 46 years. He married twice: first to Sarah Geddy of Halifax, NC. One of their children was William Geddy Hill, later a Raleigh physician. Mr. Hill and other family members ar buried in the Old City Cemetery, near the grave of William White, an earlier Secretary of State.
