General Note
James Walker Hood was born in Chester County, PA, and was the first black missionary sent to the freedmen of North Carolina. He and his wife lived and taught near New Bern, NC. for about 3 years beginning about 1864.In 1868 he became Assistant Supt. of Public Instruction, supervising the public schools for Black children and other institutions of learning for Afro-Americans. After declining a Republican nomination for N.C. Secretary of State in 1872, he later served as Bishop of the A.M.E. Zion Churcj in NC and VA. (Source: sketch by Grady L. E. Carroll)
