General Note
Mr. Johnson was born in Raleigh Nov. 23, 1860, attending Atlanta University in 1889-91. An Afro-American, he was very active in NC politics, as an alderman in Raleigh for two years, as chairman of the 14th Congressional District for the Republican Party in NC. In 1917 he beame the first Afro-American to every sit in the NY legislature in Albany. (excerpt from article in The Carolinian May 7, 1942 p. 1)
