He was named after his namesake, General Leonidas Polk and was related to President James Knox Polk.
General Note
Mr. Polk founded the town of Polkton, and edited a local newspaper there. He was an advocate of agriculoture and promoted the Establishment of a state Department of Agriculture. Gov. Zebulon Vance appointed him the first Commissioner of Agricuture, an appointment he later resigned in 1880. He entered the newspaper publishing field as co-owner and corresponding eidtor of a Raleigh daily, The News, which later merged with The Observer, to form the present News & Observer, where he continued as an editor.
