Description
The Richard Beverly Raney Webb collection consists primarily of original materials created by members of each family, newspaper clippings relating to the families and individuals, and genealogy research pertaining to each family. Each series contains original materials pertaining to each family or subject, as well as collected genealogy notes. The collection also contains numerous artifacts, owned by relatives of Webb.

The records have been arranged into ten series organized by family name, with each series being further arranged into subseries based on materials type. Each series and subseries are arranged alphabetically. Each series contains original materials pertaining to each family or subject, as well as collected genealogy notes. The genealogy notes subseries consist of compiled notes, photocopies of original documents, and correspondence containing genealogy information. Some families are represented more heavily. The collection also contains numerous artifacts, owned by relatives of Webb.

Cowan contains correspondence, financial documents, and genealogy research related to the Cowan Family. Margaret Matilda Cowan subseries includes correspondence, which includes a large amount of materials from when Cowan attended St, Marys School in Raleigh, N.C., c. 1950s, published works, and reports from her time at St. Marys School.

Denson contains materials and collected genealogy research relating to the Denson family. Subseries include Claudius Baker Denson and Katharine Whiting Denson. Claudius Baker Denson includes clippings, correspondence, documents, ephemera, financial records, letters of recommendations, newspapers, printed materials and photographs created by or concerning Webbs great grandfather, Claudius Baker Denson. The subseries includes a run of newspapers from the Semi-Monthly Record of the Pittsboro Scientific Academy, of which Denson was headmaster. Printed materials include pamphlets and printed speeches given by Denson.

Photographs include many taken by Raney.

Biographical or Historical Data
Richard Beverly Raney Bev Webb (1934-1912) was born in Raleigh on Aug. 8, 1934, the second son of James and Margaret Denson Raney Webb of Hillsborough. Webb was the grandson of R.B. Raney (1860-1909), noted North Carolina Businessman and Philanthropist and Kate Whiting Denson (1872-1952), his second wife. Webb received his BA degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1956 and his LLB from Yale University in 1959. After Yale, Webb joined the North Carolina Air National Guard, and then the Charlotte office of the law firm of Lassiter, Moore and Van Allen in 1960. He married Katharine Forsyth Wolf in 1963. After living in Charlotte, Webb then moved back to his Hometown of Hillsborough. Webb was an active member of the community, and served on the board of numerous organizations. He had an interest in history and historic preservation, being a member and serving on the board of numerous organizations, including the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Preservation Commission and Board of Preservation North Carolina. Webb also had an interest in genealogy and conducted research on his families. Webb died in 2012, and was buried at St. Mathews Episcopal Church in Hillsborough.
